Kill Zone, A Young Adult Adventure

I aimed for young adult writing with my new release, Kill Zone, but I did so after-the-fact. The book was already written when I realized, with just a few modifications, I could remove offensive language and unnecessary explicit scenes and have an excellent story suitable for young people. The book is filled with science fact and new theories, enough to make people think, so it seemed a natural work to offer the young. Some might consider the subject matter, terrorism, to be at the fringe for young adults, but in today's world terrorism is a fact of life and hiding it won't change a thing. Against the backdrop of terrorism, there are also interrelated plots of the development of a solution to the oil crisis and a love story that withstands the test of time and separation. There is also avarice--a quest for Mayan gold and the related exploration of the massive underwater caverns in Yucatan, Mexico.

Kill Zone was my second young adult book, although it is the first of a related pair of contemporary fiction novels. While Kill Zone presents one possible result of unrestrained biological terrorism, its sequel deals with the recovery from an environmental disaster of unthinkable proportions--the re-population of earth. In both novels, the heroes are young females. They are strong, witty and tenacious. Both face an uncertain future, and both are brought close to the love of their life by the dangerous situations they face and the way they handle them.

Kill Zone Blurb: Dr. Marcy Whites overcomes enormous genetic engineering obstacles to resurrect a prehistoric bacterium, V5, capable of creating renewable oil, and reclaims the love of her life in the process. After V5 is designated a national resource, Marcy’s team is sequestered in Cheyenne Mountain, but bio-terrorism quickly overshadows her successes. People die by the millions when genetically-engineered beta-hemolytic streptococcus (BHS) is inadvertently released in Mecca, a pathogen specifically developed for bio-terrorism. Carried by fanatical Ambulatory Infectious Agents seeking martyrdom, the flesh-eating disease spreads like wildfire with a 100% kill rate, while Predictive Antiviral Project (PAP) scientists in Cheyenne Mountain race to develop a vaccine to counter it. Out of desperation, countries agree to sanitize the infectious outer perimeter of the Kill Zone with nuclear weapons, even as Dr. Whites joins the PAP team to adapt V5 as a BHS antidote. Their deadline passes, and Operation Sanitize releases mankind’s most powerful weapons against its smallest enemy. Nuclear detonations temporarily halt expansion of the Kill Zone, but Dr. Whites continues antidote refinement, knowing BHS-laden dust will eventually settle. Kill Zones soon crop up worldwide, the entire world is inoculated with V5, and energy independence is achieved; however, one year later, birth rates begin declining. Marcy and other scientists locked inside Cheyenne Mountain gird for an extended stay – at least until the anomaly can be fully explained.

Aftermath Horizon suggests a reason Adam and Eve’s children find mates in the biblical book of Genesis. The novel takes readers far into the future by investigating deep into the past.

Aftermath Horizon Blurb: In a world struggling to recover from biological warfare, Cultural Anthropologists, Beth Gooding and Professor James, work to resurrect the technology of the past without the brutality of the past. They lead austere lives typical of the early 1800’s frontier, until they become explorers in Old World Syria – where they investigate further back in time than anyone ever dreamed, and discover they can move their society further forward than anyone ever imagined. David and Beth endure many brushes with death, but with each experience their love grows stronger, and they come to realize life without the other wouldn’t be living at all.

Thanks for reading,

Romantic suspense with holiday spirit

Of course we want our homes filled with holiday happiness. Our lawn needs glitz as well even though reindeer and igloo might have lost some lights. All this is hard work. When I want to relax, I read or write in my favorite genre-- sensuous love stories when the heroine and hero face villains trying to knock them off! Love and danger fill the pages of DEEDS OF DECEIT, a December release from Eternal Press. Now my head is toying with the second book in my WELCOME TO THE LAKE series. I think of something bad and then make it worse. Isn't that fun, ha ha.
One of my favorite author's is Canadian Margaret Atwood who was inspired by fairy tales. In her kaleidoscopic variation of Bluebeard, she substitutes the "dreaded forbidden chamber" with her husband's secrets and evil intent. Fairy tales contain classic elements such as the monster, search for love, violent struggle, and usually a happy ending!

Conundrum...

So,

Got an idea for a new Women’s Contemporary fiction book.

I was talking to a friend the other day, and she was telling me about this huge conundrum that she’s in. I thought that I would the scenario for a new book. Then I thought I would send it out, have you guys respond to it, and then whoever has the best answer, I’ll base the ending of the book on what they wrote back to me. You’ll get partial credit for the concept, be acknowledged at the end of the book for your contributions, and get some fame out of it lol.

However, there are some stipulations for answers:

  1. You Can Not answer in a Christian tone, (i.e, you’re goin to hell in gasoline draws, God is gonna punish you, or the Bible says blazay, blazay….)
  2. She is NOT a hoe, so I won’t accept answers like that.
  3. Give serious answers, on what you think she should do.
  4. Whichever is the best answer I’m gonna use for the ending of the book.

Scenario:

My friend and I were having coffee the other day, and I asked how her love life was going. She started laughing hysterically, and then commenced to tell me about it. She’d been dating this older guy, (she’s 35) for over a year now, but they have absolutely nothing common. (Yes sometimes this is good, but others it can be a disaster, which is what they are.) They have nothing in common whatsoever.

My friend, we’ll just say Emma, is a progressive liberal-near socialist, and he’s a conservative. They have nothing in common, except sex, (here she says it is off the chain hahaha). The sex is amazing, but they can’t have a normal conversation without it turning into an argument. Yet, despite this craziness, s says that he is a very sweet person (I’ve met him a couple of times and other than his spews of bollix on social issues he seemed nice enough). He does anything to make her happy, but he won’t see anyone else’s views as valid. He constantly talks shite about anything other than his views or beliefs, like the fact that education is a rip off, professors are shysters ( here you know I wanted to punch him the f*** out!) but they have been together for a year and she loves him to some degree; (but I think it’s more that she’s comfortable, he’s dependable, and she feels like since she’s 35 she doesn’t want to get out there in the meat market of dating).

Well, she happened to be at starbucks getting coffee and some guy asked what she was ordering out of the blue, and she turned to see who it was, and she said she was like wow( I know, already an intro for a book lol, I just need to make him extra yummy lol). They started talking, and he asked her for coffee the following week.

She decided to go, and said that she had a blast.

Here in lies her problem; she found out that he was only 26 years old (hahahahaha! Yes, I feel like use and abuse him for all of us over 35 year old women!).

He is everything that she wants. He’s funny, caring, likes the things that she likes, is kewl wit her 12 year old son, notices things, (like she got a hair cut, lost weight) and she has been dating him on the side for the last 4 months. Well, it’s been 4 months, but she hasn’t told the other guy that she’s been dating the 26 year old.

Last week she said it got intimate, and here I’m sorry but I couldn’t help laughing, because she said that the 26 year old he was only 5’9 and hung like a horse! (LmmfaO, Hahahahaha!).

Well, my answer to this could have gone several way. But seeing as how we’ve been friends for over a decade, she already knows what I’m gonna say to her. So I thought, I’d put it out there to you guys, and see what you thought? I already told her that I was gonna use it for a women’s fiction, so go ahead and give me your best.

She said that she was reluctant to make a choice, and I asked her why; this is what she said.

  1. She’s 35 years old with a 12 year old son, and could she really have a relationship of significance with a 26 year old?
  2. The 43 year old is stability, even if he is a dick most of the time
  3. What if next week the 26 year old decided to date someone his own age, and where does that leave her if she gives up the 43 year old?
  4. Although she is totally enraptured with the 26 year old, he wants things that she doesn’t (children, marriage), and wants her to want the same.

So, here is what you have to answer;

What would you advise her to do?

C’mon y’all make em good. Whichever is the best is the one that I’m gonna use for the book, will be posted on all my book sites, and you get credit for your answer if I use it. Leave them @www.freewebs.com/poisonedpin on the shout outs page

P.S.

The Holidays...

So,

Today is a new day, whoot hoot. Lost of writing to do today, because since i decided to push back book 11 and make it 12, I have loads of RESEARCH to do for the new book lol, but i love it anyway.
I'm happy today, because I'm doing two online interviews, and this is sooo much fun. When i finish and they have posted I'll let you guys know about it.
The site came out really good after I took some suggestions from a fellow writer; and i can say that she hit it the nail on the head, and I'm enjoying it better as well.
The new trailers are up, and I should have the ones up for the Historical ones up sometime next week. With this being the holiday season so much is to be done, so sometime with demands from family this stuff can get backlogged.
But anyway I'm pretty happy with the trailers. Can you guess which shot is of me at 17 lol?
I used my daughters and nieces for the main female characters, and this was so fun.
My oldest daughter was shocked, but she loved it anyway.
So check out the site (www.freewebs.com/poisonedpin) and see the new trailers.
Not to mention they are so kewl to make. I want people to see what I see, that love has no color, that love is just that; LOVE.
I had such a great time writing this series, so I just ran with it and had fun with it.
Just so the people out there know, my main female characters are of mixed race (eg. African-America/white, Japanese/Irish/African-American, Romanian/African-American) so being of mixed blood myself, I write from that perspective. But I totally hope that this will not deter you from reading my books, watching my trailers, or buying my books; because a good story is just that; regardless of race.
At least that's the way that I feel...

:)

Have a great Holiday season, and don't for get to give...

An excerpt from "Kill Zone"

Kill Zone was released by Eternal Press in Nov, 2011. I've include an excerpt below for you reading pleasure. Please note the free offer at the conclusion of the excerpt.

--------------------

Still teasing, she leaned forward, exposing most of her ample breasts, and raised one leg with her arms, a stretching exercise for Greg’s eyes alone. “If you must know, and I suppose you must, I’m here because of the rocks you sent.”

Greg jerked back in obvious disbelief. “The Altar Pool stones? You’ve got to be kidding.”

Marcy leaned against the back of the tank as officially as she could, and her tone became crisp and business-like. “Before I can tell you anything, you must acknowledge that what you’re about to hear is Company Secret information and falls totally within the realm of the Company Proprietary Agreement you signed when you hired on. Because you’re the head of this exploration team, I have permission to brief you, but no one on your team can know what you’re about to hear, not even Garcia. Do you understand?”

Marcy could move from playmate to director with amazing speed, a fact not unnoticed before they separated. Although she had something important to tell him, he could barely focus on anything but the fullness of her breasts glimmering light-orange in the tannin-hued water. Nevertheless, Marcy was at work now, so he forced himself to shake off the imagery of her naked body just beneath the surface. “Fine, I understand, what about the stones?”

Marcy gave him the short version about how she obtained the Virgin from Doctor Inman, and how V1 and V2 had been synthesized. She also explained her interest in the Altar Pool stones, and how disappointed her team had been when they determined the stones contained no useful DNA fragments.

Greg nodded, but remained fixated on her breasts. “I see. I knew you didn’t come here just to see me, but I’d hoped there was a little of that in there, somewhere.”

Despite being fully reclined and naked in the tub, Marcy hadn’t shifted gears. Her business mindset replied without a second thought. “No, I came here to retrieve the small stone you found on the jungle floor, the only one that didn’t come from the Altar Pool. HQ thought there was too much risk to discuss it further in message traffic. I came here to get the stone and brief you in case you find others like it. If you find more, they don’t want to lose them. Please tell me you still have the one you mentioned in your message.”

Greg sighed. “Yeah, I think so. I’m sure I took it out of my pants pocket before pitching them in the laundry, but we might have to search a bit to find it.”

Marcy stood in the tank and playfully asked for her towel. The sight of her totally naked body took his breath away. “Nothing here you haven’t seen before, Greggy. Let’s get some food, and then find that stone.” She had returned from work, and Greg felt a rush of anticipation like a teenaged boy opening up a Playboy for the first time.

She put on the damp, clean clothes stashed behind the changing screen, and splashed on fresh mosquito repellant. “My God! This stuff reeks!” She continued to lather it on to ward off the cloud of mosquitoes gathering around her.

“I’m really disappointed,” Greg said, “I got our most popular essence, ‘d'études de jungle.’ It could take a little time, but you’ll come to love the way the light motor oil scent blends subtly with the full-bodied but subdued sulfur aroma.”

An indignant expression crossed Marcy’s face. “I’m the clean one here, Greg. I thought the odor was coming from you. Did you fart?” That was the Marcy he remembered, the one he loved and missed every waking moment—like they had never been apart—the Marcy who had ripped his heart out.

The hum of hundreds of small beating wings increased, and Marcy collected her belongings with renewed urgency. “Better get me out of here. They’re gathering for dinner, and I’m the main course. There’s nothing more appealing to a mosquito than fresh flesh.”

Greg looked longingly at her stunning body, thinking, I couldn’t agree more.

They met up with Calvin at the mess tent. He was downing another beer as Marcy approached. “Damn good food ya got here, lady. I’ll be stayin’ the night, so I can take you out in the morning.” He popped the top on another can and slugged down a gulp. “Damn good beer, too!”

She gave Calvin a light pat on the shoulder. “Thanks for getting me here, but take it easy on those things, at least enough to get me out tomorrow. I’ll be ready by 10 a.m. That should get us back in time for the afternoon courier flight.” Calvin nodded, and Greg and Marcy ambled to the serving line. Food choices were simple in the jungle. They got what had been cooked, and then sat in the far corner of the tent, as far away from all the others as possible.

Greg squeezed as close to Marcy as he could. “We have some pretty good chefs here, but little selection. They use a combination of air dropped supplies and what they find fresh in the jungle. The flavors are unique, but almost everyone likes it. It’s hard to keep drillers if you don’t feed them well and, of course, provide a reasonable ration of beer.”

They talked for an hour, laughing over the exploits of old friends and talking about work. Occasionally they looked into each other’s eyes without saying a word, wondering, Is it all still there?

After the meal, they headed for Greg’s tent to locate the stone, discussing old times as they shuffled along. Greg opened his tent flap as a man might if he were offering his coat for a lady to cross into a carriage over a muddy gutter. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

Greg’s stark accommodations were anything but the Waldorf-Astoria. The interior smelled of oilcloth, and the décor included only a crude foldout desk with a laptop on it, a rack of communications equipment, a cot, her wet suitcase, a duffel bag, mosquito strips hanging from every corner, a couple of boxes with books and reports and little else except for a few cluttered clothes.

She shook her head comically. “Ah, Greg, you really know how to impress a lady.”

Before she could say another word, his lips were on hers. He kissed her with all the passion he had built up over seven long months. Neither had kissed another since their last, and she melted against him, pressing her hips into his and her breasts into his chest.

In that moment, they knew they were still lovers. Nothing had changed. He gently laid her on his cot and knelt next to her, lightly stroking her damp bangs. “I’ve missed you. I’m so glad you’re here.”

A small tear formed in the corner of her eye as he moved his hands softly over her breasts and, as he began removing her clothes, her whole body shuddered. “I’m so sorry, Greg. The fight was stupid. I love you. I’ve missed you, too.”

They made love for hours, at first on the cot and later, after sealing the tent, finding the rock and checking for snakes, on the tent floor. Despite getting little sleep, Marcy felt fresh when the sun penetrated the tent’s mosquito net-covered vents the next morning. Greg sensed her stirring. Before she fully woke, he rolled over to make love to her one last time.

They relished it, bathed in it, and on that tent floor, in the middle of the jungle with the noise of the exploration team all around them, they experienced climaxes given in total love and taken together. It was like the first time, joining their souls forever. In that chaotic place, for a fleeting moment in time, they found a deeper peace than they had known at any time in their lives.
